PERSONALLY . . . I’ve always felt extraordinarily lucky to be a pediatric dentist. It’s more of a passion with me than a profession. Perhaps where others find their “work” as a means to earn an income to enable them to lead the kind of life they would like to enjoy, pediatric dentistry is an integral part of what I enjoy most out of life. Ernest Gallo of Ernest and Julio Gallo Wines once said that he felt no need to retire from his job, “just so he could do the things he always wanted to do.” Why? Because he was already doing them! In large part I feel the same way. My vision has been to use my education and experience to develop a private practice that cares for all types of children, chief among them the treatment of the medically complex child, children with special needs such as those with cerebral palsy, autism, developmental disabilities and ADHD to name a few as well as being dedicated to the care of healthy children. I am very proud of the fact that this vision has become a reality and that taking care of so many types of children is not only highly rewarding but a never ending journey. - Everyone on my team believes that all children are special. We are focused on making personal decisions about each “special child’s” needs and recommend treatment in the proper setting that WILL NOT CREATE A NEGATIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT.
I believe one of the outstanding advantages our practice has is the fact that we are located on the Stanford University campus directly across the street from Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital. Being on staff at the hospital and in close proximity has enabled us to consult with the pediatrics department as well as treat a wide variety of children with medical conditions whose problems may be exacerbated by preexisting dental conditions (i.e. – Children on chemotherapy for cancer or a child whose immune system has been suppressed in preparation for a heart or liver transplant.). Personally, I was born in Camp Campbell, Kentucky when my father was in the service. Following that, our family moved to Europe when I was six months old where my father worked as an engineer, living in France and Germany until I was 14. We then moved back to the United States settling in Monterey, Ca. After going to college, “up here” I went back to Harvard for my dental degrees and then to UCLA for my pediatrics residencies. Being a part of a close-knit family, I returned to Monterey and practiced as a pediatric dentist for nine years before returning to Palo Alto to start our present practice, emphasizing the treatment of the medically complex child both in our office and at Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital. I currently reside in Los Altos and in my spare time I am a semi-prolific reader, enjoy swimming, cycling and am an avid Formula 1 racing fan. I enjoy traveling to various countries during the Formula 1 season whenever possible to catch a race and am currently writing a book having to do with Formula 1 racing. PERSONALLY . . .
I was educated locally and attended schools in San Jose from elementary schools through university education. I have been caring for children’s dental health more than twenty years. — As fate would have it, I have no children of my own so I feel blessed to have chosen a career that allows me to dedicate myself to spending time to care for yours. While attending San Jose City College and San Jose State University, I was employed by the San Jose Recreation department as an elementary school playground leader. This experience taught me that I LOVE WORKING WITH CHILDREN. At the time, I didn’t realize that this experience would lead to a lifetime caring for children’s dental needs and teaching them how to maintain healthy and beautiful smiles. I received my doctorate education in southern California. I couldn’t wait to return north again to establish myself as a pediatric dentist. I took a three-year hiatus early in my career and returned to San Jose State University to complete a second bachelor’s degree in Spanish. It was a labor of love and I graduated with great distinction in 1987. Personally . . . I was born in Dallas Texas but consider myself a native Californian having moved west as a child. In my spare time I love to play golf and travel. If you are ever involved in a charity golf tournament, especially one that benefits children . . . I would love an invitation! It will be my privilege to meet you and support your families dental health in any way you are comfortable allowing me. Dr. Sam Su-Chieh Brian Liu, D.D.S., M.S. PERSONALLY . . . Joining Dr. Adams practice in Palo Alto has made my life’s journey come full circle. I was born across the street at Stanford Hospital and spent the first few years of my life running around the playgrounds in Escondido Village. My family then moved to Sunnyvale where I went to elementary and middle school. I attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View where I was involved in various activities including music, speech and debate, Boy Scouts, and sports, including rowing for the crew team in Los Gatos. For college, I decided to brave the cold and headed East to study at Harvard University. During my first winter in Boston, I knew I would eventually return to sunny California! While in college, I befriended a dentist and worked in his office for a year. Seeing the doctor-patient relationship and the care that is integral to healthcare brought back memories from my childhood when I would visit hospitalized patients in the spinal cord injury unit and play Christmas carols for them on my recorder. During this time I also saw the impact that a healthy, beautiful smile has on a person’s well being and developed a passion for dentistry. I was inspired to pursue a career in dentistry and started dental school at Columbia University following my graduation from college. While treating patients of all ages in dental school, I realized how natural and fulfilling it is for me to interact with and treat children and decided to pursue a specialty in pediatric dentistry. Creating an enjoyable experience and educating children on the importance of oral health is critical in preventing cavities and shaping each child’s future experiences at the dental office. I take great care to make each child’s visit to the dentist both fun and memorable and feel invigorated when a fearful child leaves smiling and happy. Engaging parents in the dialog is a key component of a successful dental visit and I work with each parent to make sure their child’s treatment is well understood.
